Qualify your Electrical Tradie

Understanding  and Engaging Electricians and Contractors

Tradespeople in NSW are required to be licensed Contractors to conduct any building or construction work over the value of $5,000. This applies regardless of its cost and whether the work is residential, commercial or industrial. This work may range from  construction, alterations, repairs and renovations to more specialist work such as electrical, solar  and air-conditioning work.

An Electrical Contractor in NSW is a company or individual that is Authorized by the state of NSW to perform electrical work for the general public.

To become an Electrical Contractor in NSW you must be:

  1. A Qualified & Licensed Electrician
  2. Carry appropriate Public Liability Insurance
  3. Declare your criminal and financial history to Fair Trading NSW.

If you are paying an electrician to perform work, they should be an working under an electrical contractor or be an electrical contractor themselves. All work should be delivered as per the Australian Wiring Rules. The Australian Wiring Rules (AS3000:2007) provides a practical guide for Electricians on the correct way to safely do electrical work. In the event of a problem or dispute the Wiring Rules will be used to define the minimum standard/quality of work by Authorities.

If you are unsure about an Electrician, follow these simple steps:

  • Make sure they have a contractors license, you can check it online here (JDZ Electrical Lic #306202C - https://www.onegov.nsw.gov.au/PublicRegister/#/publicregister/search/Trades - you can also see any compliance issues the contractor has had with Fair Trading NSW.
  • Ask to see a copy of their Public Liability Insurance - This should have a minimum cover of $10M and also state the purpose of the policy is for the delivery of Electrical Works or similar.
  • Ask for references - If you are going to spend thousands of dollars, taking 5 minutes to check references will give you confidence in your contractor.

Last but not least is communication, if you are unsure, ask for a written quote up front, if you are still not sure, seek clarifications in writing. A good quote should have:

  1. The Scope of Works - in clear English
  2. What is Included or Excluded
  3. Delivery Date or Time line
  4. Terms and Conditions
  5. Payment Terms

The above information should give you the tools to ensure your Electrical Works will be delivered to your expectations and your experience will be hassle free.

If you have any questions, see the contact us section above.
